Candidates intending to apply for entry to Maths courses at the University of Oxford and Imperial College London are required to take the Mathematics Admissions Test (MAT). The exam is sat in early November prior to interview. The results do not, as such, form part of a conditional offer, but are likely to strongly influence which students are likely to be made an offer for a place.
MAT does not require knowledge of Mathematical theory beyond AS level. So students can usually start preparing for MAT in the summer after their Year 12. Indeed even students considering taking STEP (which require A2 and Further Maths theory) may find MAT an excellent introduction to the type of thinking required to study maths at undergraduate level.
